"Dying" is a German film from 2024 that has not received much recognition in the world. Even at its home, the Berlin Film Festival, the film won only a silver bear for the best screenplay. Not a single friend of mine has seen this film in the Letterboxd. But I still watched it, and you know what, it is brilliant.
This is exactly the kind of film that later, years or decades later, is recognized as great. It will become a monolithic pillar of European cinema of the 21st century, and deservedly so. It made an indelible impression on me.
The film tells the story of one family and the people connected with them. The fates of all family members are difficult. A dying old man, a sick old woman, a loser brother and a drunkard sister. And they all hate each other. And we, as viewers, fully understand why. For most, of course, Tom will become the main moral support and the character who you want to empathize with the most. However, this confidence will also be shaken. After all, there are no good and bad characters here, there is no good and evil or any other extremes. This is the most realistic and down-to-earth story about life, in which ... everyone is dying. Some do it physically, some morally. But they are all united by the fact that no one has found "that very line". And this line in this case is banal - happiness. According to Glasner, everyone in this world is deeply unhappy, it's just that their unhappiness is expressed in different ways. But he emphasizes that this is life, with all the hardships, problems and litigation. Life does not have to be beautiful, good or pleasant, because life is just a fact. And whether life can be called a choice is another question that Glasner poses to the viewer.
The film's depth drives you into the deepest depression. After all, the viewer can easily relate to almost everything shown. Purely intuitively, he immerses himself in all the crap that Glasner plunges us into from the very beginning. And it becomes scary to live such a meaningless and forgotten life, where death will mean more than all life before. Or maybe it won't mean anything. All life is the process of "dying." A slow fading away with its own tragic story for everyone.
