I’m about to turn this page into a Michael Snow fan account.
From what I can tell Michael snows films are largely focused on the cameras, relationship to the space it inhabits. The camera in this film is largely just placed in a very traditional office filled with what can be assumed our employees just going about their day. But as always snow is here to take a setting and completely flip it on its head.
But in this very interesting case snow comments on something that surprisingly few works really talk about with any sort of artistic lens. That being the Internet and its capabilities to distort and warp the world, we live in. The world of these office employees is completely twisted shaped and bent into an amalgamation of comedy sexuality, and even horror using what was at the time, modern digital software. This idea that even our every day mundane spaces, routines and actions have been and are being completely re-shaped by the rapidly advancing technology around us yet we still walk around each day like nothings changed.
However, what’s unique about Corpus Callosum is unlike a lot of art that covers the topic of ever expanding technology Corpus Callosum isn’t overbearingly or inherently negative. Many times when we see our talking about the rise of technology it’s framing it as this doom and gloom end of civilization end of art end of life, unstoppable force. But Corpus Callosum doesn’t necessarily take a positive or negative stance on it. How I interpret it is Corpus Callosum is simply showing technologies, ability to drastically shape our lives, yet not necessarily change how we feel about it. Despite the insanity on screen, everyone seems to be pretty unbothered by what’s happening around them, which is both comforting and unsettling.
Michael snow is very quickly becoming one of my favorite film makers of all time
