the moment ‘ay ay ay im ur little butterfly’ started playing, i already knew someone cooked here.
it’s true, every second of this film is worth all the hype around it. the kaleidoscope of colours merge with the pain men put women through just..wow, it just scratches the right part of my brain.
for her first feature, Linh managed to showcase such a strong direction in her narrative while balancing elements of the role of women in a family, infidelity, lost love, loneliness, superstitions and comedy etc. with such an experimental take is insane. I thought that the pacing of the story was so well thread and though with multiple relationships arcs and problems they all felt cohesive and lead back to the bigger picture.
this film captured the essence of the role of Tam in the family. Just like many others, she’s expected to be the housewife, the mother, the grown up and the friend but when does she ever get to be herself? why does she feel the burden in fixing an infidelity caused by her husband? it reflects so heavily on Southeast Asia’s norms on broken families and how so many (mainly women) are forced to put up a front just to look like a normal family.
every shot felt so intentional & so visually captivating with the usage of unconventional shots types and colour ways. i love it when a filmmaker uses light to introduce/guide us into a space. don’t think i could ever forget the scene when Ha is introduced for the first time. Tam opens the door and curtains, lighting up all the right parts of Ha and the room; featuring a little rainbow reflection on her face. & quick shoutout to the production design in this film, every thing in the house feels like a piece of history as if they all had their own story.
omg i just loved every second of this, can’t wait to see Linh and the team’s next work.
