90 minutes. two, maybe three actual plot events. absolutely riveting. easily the best war movie ive ever seen.
definitely alex garland’s best work — the attention to detail here is what makes the execution so incredible. this is an honest depiction of a single military scenario during the us deployment in iraq. it’s not making any value judgements, it’s not putting any spin on the events, it’s simply depicting the events as they happened, with every detail (down to each line of dialogue) faithfully restored.
banger representation of decision making under pressure, and unlike other war movies, shows that the people behind those decisions are painfully human. this isn’t the avengers — when a claymore goes off next to your head your shit gets rattled. when you’re hurt you’re gonna scream and beg for morphine. you’re gonna forget how to explain to someone on the radio exactly what house you’re in.
and wow, did i feel like i was in that house with those guys. absolutely glued to my chair, didn’t want the ride to end.
