Ghost train is a Korean anthology horror movie about the dangers of the subway. There are also Ghosts, infectious phlegm and a cult. So it brings everything that makes an interconnected anthology horror movie.
Following a YouTuber as she investigates a subway station where there are a great many disappearances. As she tries to figure out what's going on a older station master who tells her 4 tales of people who disappeared. As her investigation goes on her fame grows too.
There are 4 stories. I'll explain them in order of my favorites. The best was lina's, her story goes full body horror with the theme of fame going to your head. The second best was the one with the Bandaged woman, it explores the theme of beauty standards as a young woman is hunted. The third favorite is the homeless man, his story focuses on greed and always wanting more and it has a cool twist. The forth and least favorite is the young man's story, it's a good introduction with a good ghost scare at the end but it's just a little boring compared to the rest.
The wraparound follows the YouTuber as she hears the stories and how they start to effect her life. It's a slow burn in the best ways. The ending is also pretty good as she finds out what is going on but is it to late to save herself. It's one of the more interesting wraparound I've seen in anthologies in a while.
The scares are good too. They aren't just jumpscares and if they are it's a good jumpscare. Like in the Bandaged woman story. What works with the scares is that it is the best of both worlds between jumpscares and slow burn horror. The ending leaves you questioning things in the best ways too.
The subway itself is used very well as a central location. It takes each part of a subway station and uses it well in each scare especially the 2 bathroom sequences. I also think the cult train at the end is very cool.
So ghost train keeps the good horror train going from south Korea. It has an Intresting location, good scares and engaging stories. Ghost train is a good time all around.
