“You don’t say ‘No’ to God. You take what he gives you and you make something of it.”
This movie goes to show that both Denzel Washington and Spike Lee still have fuel in the tank at their respective ages. Spike has a lot to say here. From the direction the music industry is heading, one’s own family legacy, or morale liability. The issue is the movie takes entirely too long to get what its point. It doesn’t start to excel until it’s outside the framing of the original. At the point it’s almost entirely too long into its runtime (almost over a hour). Outside of pacing the good out way the bad. Spike Lee’s direction is still remarkable. Denzel is doing some of his best work in the ladder half. Surprisingly, ASAP Rocky stands his own here as well. Curious to see more from him.
Am I mad this is a limited release, yes. Do I understand, quite frankly yes.
This is going to be divisive for sure. As a whole it leaves something to be desired. Luckily, Spike Lee gets ahold of the reigns just in time.
(I just want to also praise having a prominent Muslim character that’s not a stereotype in any fashion. Made my heart warm.)
