I only watched Mr. Burton because of its BAFTA Outstanding British Film nomination. This year’s category is actually pretty solid overall, but it does have a couple of real slogs, this being one of them.
There’s good stuff here. Toby Jones is reliably solid, but he’s essentially playing a variation on the same softly spoken, emotionally repressed middle-aged man he’s done in other projects, only this time with a noticeably weaker script.
Harry Lawtey is genuinely impressive. He nails the Richard Burton cadence without tipping over into parody.
The problem is the script. It’s all very standard. I found it really hard to get through, despite the relatively short runtime. It’s the sort of respectable, heritage-leaning drama your grandparents will absolutely love.
Three stars. Admirable intentions, some strong performances, but ultimately a bit of a slog.

Really enjoyed this film, even though it was quite depressing at points. Richard Burton’s career was so promising and could’ve gone so much further! All the actors were great in this film and really compelling. 

I thought Harry Lawtey was really impressive, hard to play such a complex and phenomenal actor, but he did.

Will watch anything with Lesley Manville in!
