Perfectly captures the suffering of the poor, the ignorance and the cluelessness of the intellectuals and primarily the uselessness of revolution or any political system before the radicalisation of the population's collective mindset.
Amberber, the main character, is a socialist doctor who initially believes in the DERG’s regime and the prosperity it would bring. And he hastens his way to his country just to end up in a suffocated nation instead of the utopian one he was expecting.
After this irony, Amberber ends up losing his hope, even in himself. He loses his faith, not only in the system but in his own ability as an intellectual to end the suffering of the people.
He tries to get back to Europe and lead his peaceful yet hollow life, and remorsing for the souls he couldn't save. Nevertheless, he encounters insensible and futile and racist beating by some young punks, that's when he realises this(Europe) was not his place, the capital city of ethiopia was not his place but the rural, the place he was born and raised was his place and he did it he just went there and lived there as a commoner teacher in a village.
A perfect film, with something meaningful, I'm proud to see something extraordinary coming out of this once who was immaculate, but now spoiled and decayed country.
