That statue gaslit everyone 💅깊은 밤 갑자기 was an absolute gem. Part erotic thriller, mind fuck and a psychedelic overdose of colors, creative camerawork, kaleidoscopes combined with a gripping story that blurs the lines of the mortal and the mind. Though it was my first time watching this, I was in a cinema with bunch of my fellow 할머니들이 who were watching with intent — clearly a cult favorite.
On the actual film: 깊은 밤 갑자기 centers around a housewife and her expeditionary husband who she suspects of cheating on her with the new, 19 year old maid he brings home from work one day. Not only so, but the maid brings with her one sole belonging: a folk spiritual korean doll, accessorized with a knife. Strange things begin to happen across the house. Nightmares featuring the affair and jealousy take ahold of the woman as she begins to lose her senses.
In this way, Go’s work is absolutely gripping. The story itself plays out perfectly which is complemented by quick-cut edits in key moments to create unease and visualize the thinking process of our protagonist. I’ll admit that it’s not a typical horror film. There are times of fear but the film also plays like a soap opera, slowly unraveling in what leaves a bigger mark on the viewer: was everything simply in her head? Subliminal acting and an intriguing visual style leaves the viewer entertained which culminates in one of the most memorable sequences by the end.
There are so many films which may be similar to some extent but it’s undeniable that Go’s hour and a half long piece stands it’s own ground as a unique piece of work: a mix of genres and an excellent example of how experimental, radical, visual storytelling can elevate one’s story and furthermore, a viewer’s senses. Absolutely adore this.
