I remember when this movie came out I was SO EXCITED because I LOVE MAGIC AND MAGICIANS! I wanted to be one and still think that be an awesome dream to have. I didn’t catch it in theatres, and then heard the poor reviews… so I didn’t think of it… until now!!
Recommended by friend Megan, this is the height of very silly and stupid comedy’s of the 2010s. This is where we would get slop like this comedy, with more jokes that didn’t land than did, that really put comedy movies away for YEARS.
However, there is some redeeming qualities to Burt Wonderstone. I think many people say it’s the worst comedy ever and turn it off half way through… which is where the movie finally finds its footing and ends up being a very funny and passable comedy with a really sweet message to it! With a surprising A+ performance from Alan Arkin ♥️
It wasn’t totally laughless in the first half either. Jim Carey is LOL funny as a Chris Angel Parody, and that direction of magic.
I think a lot of the first half doesn’t work because of how unlikable Steve Carell is in the first half. Besides the sky box scene (which I adore) it’s just cringe and hard to watch. His character becomes so sweet and likeable in the second half, but it was like he was playing two different characters?? The arc from one character to the other was so quick and unearned
I love magic, you can’t disappoint me with magic and the culture surrounding magic. THIS MOVIE IS JKT AS BAD AS EVERYONE SAYS! It’s not great, but a good time is still to be had… especially if you stick with it past the first half!
