Pier Paolo Pasolini’s debut feature and my introduction to his work. Accattone is a rough neorealist drama that follows the life of a pimp, nicknamed Accattone, as he struggles to survive in the dusty outskirts of Rome once his prostitute is jailed. While Accattone is a selfish, lazy and unlikeable character Pasolini makes sure to never mock him or portray him in an undignified manner, this is what Pasolini does with the entirety of the rather sleazy side of life he’s showing in this film. He also films these profane aspects of life with an almost religious reverence, showing that everyone deserves dignity. Even though there is a certain level of respect with these choices, Pasolini still manages to capture the unruly and poor atmosphere within this part of Italy. I did enjoy this film but found it to be slightly rough around the edges, it’s obvious this rawness was a purposeful choice by Pasolini to give the film some authentic grit, but this choice led to me feeling slightly disconnected from the story and characters. However, overall I found this to be a very fascinating and well executed film, with a lovely visual focus on people.

If theres anything to take away from this movie it’s that, it’s men who exploit the people around them to avoid their own exploitation. None of it’s forgivable, but one of the tragedies of poverty is it breeds habitats these behaviors can live in. A miserably, amazing film.
