This movie has ghouls in it, or at least the subtitles translate Gakidama as ghoul, which of course gives me ideas for Call of Cthulhu gaming. He even makes some doggish sounds as he's about to birth the ghoul.
The whole thing starts with a spirit photography trip, during which our heroes, Morioka and his photographer buddy Kitayan, are followed by a mysterious stranger. Kitayan, and Morioka's wife Michiko in the next scene, watch on in horror as he eats massive amounts of food. Michiko even spots a worm creeping back up into his sinuses, and thinks she's seeing things. Yet, with his mouth developing a strange infection, in the middle of the night he gets up and goes into the kitchen to eat more, eventually escalating to raw meat which hangs from his mouth as he looks up at his wife.
That fucking ghoul is pretty funny, man. Also pretty funny that they get up in the morning and he just tries to ignore that anything happened at all at first. His wife, meanwhile, talks about the ghoul like it's his child, pitying it and mentioning the fact that she can never give birth. Morioka himself, of course, is consumed with the desire to consume the ghoul. The ghoul's attack on his wife is pretty phenomenal as she fights for her life for quite some time. The aquarium crashes, the TV explodes, there's scalding hot water, she drowns the thing and crawls upstairs and into bed but it just keeps coming. Michiko Morioka fucking rules. I've added Kazuyo Matsui's other films to a watchlist, although it's probable I'll never see most of these.
With all that being said, I'm going to return to binging Thai GL shows for a bit.

The Gakidama are like the larva of ghouls...and sometimes appear in mountain areas like that. They possess humans and grow to be ghouls in their stomachs."
