Despite an interesting premise and plot, The Black Tulip ultimately falls into dreariness at the hands of dull action, overacting, and an over-stylized portrayal of the classic novel. Meant solely as a film to advance Alain Delon's career, it does exactly that and nothing more, threatening to bore the viewer with a lack of endeavors and actual drama. I think it was clever how Alain Delon played both twin brothers, an effort ahead of its time. The action scenes scattered throughout the movie were devoid of any real action and were extremely anticlimactic, depriving the film of what should have been its saving grace. The scene where the lieutenant was given the black tulip was completely overacted and almost cringe-worthy.
