One of my favorites ever. I loved this movie as a kid and I’m happy that it’s still just as good. For what this movie is it gives you what you want. The human characters don’t matter like at all this movie is about Godzilla and not much else. Godzilla is dying, he’s quite literally about to have a heart attack that will end the world. Since his entire bodily system is a nuclear reactor it has begun to melt down. On top of that now a monster has surfaced that is a mutated variant of the oxygen destroyer and is here to also end the world. So our battle now is desotroyah must fight Godzilla in the hopes that he kills Godzilla before he melts down, at the same time Godzilla needs to kill desotroyah because if he doesn’t the world will be deprived of all of its oxygen, on top of that the military has a new fighter flyer that shoots nothing but cooling missiles and lasers so during the fight they have to keep shooting Godzilla to keep his temperature regulated. Godzilla junior is also here and is inadvertently leading Godzilla to power plants as Godzilla tries to catch back up with his son who slipped away from him during an incident between movies. These power plants also help Godzilla become more unstable as he absorbs the nuclear energy from them as he destroys them. There’s a lot going on here with the monsters is what I’m saying, so much so that the humans fall by the wayside and that would bother me a little bit usually because I generally want to like the human characters a little bit but for this movie and what it means for this era and how it ends the era I think that’s okay.
This movie really is about Godzilla passing the torch onto his lesser angry son ensuring that the earth will have a protector not born from violence and war but compassion and empathy from the generations that came after who know better now. This is a lovely ending to this era and a wonderful send off to a character who would then remain in hibernation until the next era begins in 1999… unfortunately that’s the next one is in my binge.
