it's the fact jaci wasn't even surprised..
just absolutely heartbreaking to watch. you start getting suspicious maybe 10 minutes in and then you get to that scene, and you spend the next ten minutes trying to tell urself what just happened didn't actually happen. and then it just goes downhill from there.
much like sorry, baby, the absence of any scenes depicting physical abuse makes the horrid actions just that much more disgusting. the two "hunting" scenes in particular are brutal, as well as leaving the barge the first time. and the many subtle images in the first half provide effective foreshadowing for those going in completely blind (my brain didnt even fully comprehend for a second the pregnant student).
besides the subject matter, the movie is so well made. the close up, intimate camera single handedly adds weight to scenes, and the use of natural sound is incredibly designed and intentional. and some of the shots are just insane - the repeated shot looking through the window with no glass has so many layers, and that's just one motif.
i do think the ending is a little sped up, but is still absolutely believable from a human perspective. the acting in this movie is sublime, each face telling so much without saying a word
ultimately, the movie's theming of a incredibly difficult subject matter is beautiful and tragic, and is an incredible work, the embodiment of show, don't tell
