The set up of Larry is both depressing and hilarious with the Brothers' key dialogue and bizarre, yet human, characters to establish a thene of existentialosm and how religion shapes the way in which we function and find peace. The film doesn't judge for her most part. It follows these people. These people who feel absolutely real.

The growing build up of the struggles of the lead character is relentless and the Coen's spend so much time in this world that you want to see him succeed. You care about the experiences of the lead as you know he has no way to stop it. Just like us in reality.

Everything about this is well done. I need a rewatch to fully appreciate it and grasp the opening. I think it's a meta thing though

So this is even more hopeless than No Country for Old Men. It’s supposed to be a black comedy, but none of the humor hits. The tone is incredibly bleak and none of the characters are remotely likable. Whether it’s Larry’s incompetence or the rest of the characters being downright evil. Maybe it’s because I’m not religious, but this didn’t rub me the right way. Maybe it isn’t supposed to. But still. Why.
