The Shameless
The Shameless is a brave but at the same time disappointing film.

Renuka (Anasuya Sengupta), an escaped prostitute crosses paths with a girl about to be sold off as a prostitute, Devika (Omara). Together they form a romantic bond and a will to escape.

Shameless does a wonderful job of exploring the sex industry and the exploitation the women face in these brothels. It makes you wonder how we can get these men to face accountability for their actions when these women are extremely vulnerable from all sides.

During the screening, I found out that Sengupta was a production designer, and this was her first lead performance. Yet, you wouldn't be able to figure this out by her performance. Omara similarly gives an excellent performance in her debut feature.

While the prostitution was well layered, the movie also tries to interject a lot more in this film than it could handle. The instances of Devadasi, Muslim experience in India and caste politics were hinted at but never fully explored. There is also a huge age gap between the two which could've been an interesting plot point but it was never fleshed out. Making this relationship appear more eas exploitative than genuine romance, which is the intention of the film.
