Really really enjoyed this. A meta melancholy farewell to John Wayne, his persona, the Western, and in many ways old Hollywood. Wonderful performances all around, particularly Wayne and Bacall, and having some of the old favorites like Stewart and Carradine around really just makes this really something special. Even if you don't particularly like Wayne, if you like films like Shane and Logan, this is one to check out.

I hate that I can’t help but love this piece of shit.

This movie is touching and feels like such a bigger commentary on Wayne’s career and archetype. It’s lovely and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

ALSO: Ron Howard jump scare. I thought I was watching Arrested Development with the narration at the beginning.

Dumb quip aside, I don’t have much of a history with this genre so I can’t really comment on its history or place in cinema canon. 

Looks gorgeous, with great sets. Amazing to have a movie where you can hear the dialogue because actors are acting, not whispering. A lot of great faces!
