Girl, stop taking a blind man sightseeing. This was very cute.
Over the past few months, I've been going through Dan Aykroyd's filmography, and since I've always found it valuable to examine somebody's earliest work, particularly their first features. After seeing a judge with a dick nose, a pimp costume, bleached blonde hair, a Ghostbuster, a Dr. Detroit, and a Cedar Rapids cult leader, it's nice to see such a quaint little story; oh, and he's blind. I already love low-budget indie romances, so this hit just the right spot.
The movie doesn't have a huge budget, so the central romance between Roy and Shirley had to be strong. Luckily, it was, because Dan Aykroyd and Mary Ann McDonald have adorable chemistry. They play off the other very well, and deliver generally solid performances given the low budget. In fact, the rest of the cast members do a good job, particularly the actress who portrayed the Grandma.
I was scared to watch this movie because of its plot and a scene that my friend showed me a couple of months ago. One of my cousins is blind, so I was worried that the movie would delve too far into tasteless humor, but Aykroyd never plays his blindness for laughs.
There were some aspects of filmmaking I appreciated here, too. Something my friend pointed out in their review that I found interesting was how creatively they handled the sex scene, which added more depth to Roy and Shirley's dynamic. It honestly makes their relationship feel so real. I love all their little conversations, quirks, and quiet moments.
It's not perfect, as the ending could have felt rushed, and there are other small nitpicks, but I would recommend this movie if you are a fan of Dan Aykroyd or tiny little romcoms.
