Eat your heart out Debord… such an intricate and subversive work coming from a guy who would soon become a cornerstone of the modern studio system lol… kinda haunting in that sense? It’s mockery but it’s an attitude that became exactly what the mocked wanted… yk what, eat your heart out as well Michael Haneke because this is a better social experiment than Funny Games, where watching and enjoying is not only some personal moral stain but it is also directly contributing to both the physical violence of the war machine and indoctrination of the culture industry even when solely reading the subtext
You’d think that it’d be conventionally impressive and anarchic just by reading about it but what really got me is its restraint and how slowly it unwinds… it gives you a little morsel in every ad and news reel and B-movie and porno that compounds into a rather total image/critique of American post-war culture… an early example would be this strange, murderous, and hyper-individualistic biker lining up next to an emotionally manipulative and transparently conservative love story next to British Pathe military propaganda supporting the US-backed coup in Egypt next to a really creepy swimsuit modeling competition… Dante doesn’t take obvious, quick, or easy routes toward a particular point, he instead lets the clips breathe and sit around until they get a little uncomfortable, and that gives him the room to construct and link constellations of imaginations and/or realities and bring them together through the visual noise of an old projector
