"It was stupid, but it was also theater.”
Checks out.
I watched this because Ike Barinholtz recommended it on Amy Poehler’s podcast. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be listening to his advice about literally anything else in the near future. Too many of the jokes are very flat and lazy, but even putting that aside it’s also just… bad. I didn’t think the beginning was too terrible but as it went on it just got worse and worse. I get the message and the campiness vibe of it, but yeah, just really bad. I know it’s a comedy, but I feel like we kinda just skimmed past the students drugging him into a relapse. Props to Coogan for an extremely committed performance. “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” did feel like a triumph though. He is risen, I guess. Also Skylar Astin is in this.
Who knows, maybe I’ll give it another shot because, "If Hamlet had had a little therapy, he could have turned things around. Everyone deserves a second chance."
Then again, maybe I won’t.
Fun actor sightings: -Amy Poehler as the ACLU attorney-WCW Champion David Arquette as the roommate -Elisabeth Shue!
