Five minutes in, Takeshi invades a house and beats the living shit out of a kid unprompted. Truly one of cinema’s great protagonists.

Watched this because I couldn't get enough of Takeshi kitano after watching hana-bi yesterday.
After just watching four films of his I can already say he is becoming one of my fav actors. His directing style also feels so unique, the way he effortlessly shows violence in a very minimilastic, elegant way and at the same time it also looks really fucking cool. Can't wait to finish his filmography.
Follows almost same themes as hana-bi and sonatine but this is slightly less refined than the other two.
Just when I think his endings can't shock me anymore, he did it again.

That shit was fucking crazy man. I had a friend who recommended this to me and damn was it pretty good. I’ve only seen Kitano in comedy roles and obviously his role in Battle Royale but this is some pretty extreme shit. I can definitely see Takashi Miike taking inspiration from this movie to make some of his extreme shit like Ichi the Killer and Shinjuku Triad Society.
This movie is pretty simple and easy to follow but towards the end, shit gets so intense and crazy it’s like you’re watching an entirely new movie. I love love love all the different locations in this movie and I especially love everything about the final act. The pacing in this movie can be a bit iffy and almost every punch and kick thrown in this movie is extremly fake looking but hey I don’t think it ruins the movie just kinda bumps down the score a bit. The music in this movie doesn’t play a whole lot but when it does, it’s really really good. I fucking LOVEEE the credits song.
Overall this is a pretty intense and engaging movie that I’d recommend to anybody who likes Kitano. It’s not mind blowing but it’s really solid and it’ll stick with you for a long time I think. Kitano is also very handsome in this movie just had to get that out there 😁
