Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla
"Using the bones of a dead creature to create a weapon... it’s like we’re playing God, and God doesn't like competition."

Dare I say that’s the best Mechagodzilla movie ever? I’m speechless.

The whole concept of Kiryu is absolutely insane. The fact that they didn't just build a robot from scratch but used the DNA and skeleton of the OG 1954 Godzilla is such a genius idea. Design-wise, he is easily the best version we’ve ever seen. He’s so much more quicker and mobile than the older, clunkier models. That scene where he literally shoves Godzilla right as he’s about to fire his atomic breath? and the one where he just shuts his mouth? Bro, holy aura 😭

Visually, this movie is a total banger. My jaw dropped every single time Kiryu was on screen ‘cause the cinematography is so peak that basically every frame looks like a poster you’d want on your wall. Toho really outdid themselves here.
"Kiryu isn't just a machine. He's alive."

The way the machine starts reacting on its own, driven by the soul of the 1954 original, gives the whole movie such an emotional weight. I love how it’s not just metal and wires anymore.

That connection between the pilot and the machine makes the human plot feel INCREDIBLE. You get so attached to these characters. Tbh, this might be the first time where not a single person annoyed me.
Can we talk about Yumiko Shaku for a second? She is phenomenal. Back then in Japan, actresses were often taught to be very soft, delicate, or a bit performative (sorry Megumi Odaka🥲💔), but she completely broke that mold. She played Akane with so much grit and realism that I felt very connected to her. Also, she is literally STUNNING… like, fuckin’ unreal. I’m in love.

The Godzilla design itself is a little funky this time, but it literally doesn’t matter because this movie is a masterpiece.

Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla
MechaGodzilla, since his first appearance in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 1974, has remained one of my favourite kaiju of all time. His alien origins are badass, and him being a mechanical replica of my favourite kaiju of all time Godzilla, made of FUCKING SPACE TITANIUM, totally kicks fucking ass.

Imagine the look on my face when i see not only MechaGodzilla, explicit continuity after one of my favourite movies of all time, Godzilla 1954,
and FUCKING NEON GENESIS EVANGELION????????

IT FITS SO WELL, LIKE SURPRISINGLY SO WELL, AND I DONT THINK IM IN THE WRONG FOR SAYING THIS IS A TOP 4 GODZILLA MOVIE AT LEAST, THIS MOVIE HAS ZERO FUCKING FLAWS AND ITS SO, FUCKING, GOOD?????????

THE SETPIECES ARE FUCKING AMAZING, THEY'RE SO FUCKING GOOD???????

THE SCORE IS SO GOOD I DONT EVEN KNOW HOW TO PUT IT INTO FUCKING WORDS, BUT ITS THAT FUCKING GOOD??????

THE CHARACTERS PERFECTLY SELL THE EXPERIENCE AND I CANT PUT INTO WORDS HOW PROFOUND THE CHARACTERS ALONE ARE IN THIS MOVIE

Godzilla looks TOTALLY FUCKING BADASS, the shots of him immediately laying waste to japan is so cool to see, you really get a kick out of how truly destructive he is, and how hes only there to chew gum and kill innocent japanese people (hes all out of gum)

But the most important and best character design in this movie in my opinion is Kiryu, the iron patriot version of the giant atom bomb breathing lizard who's design is the best MechaGodzilla design. Objectively. The Showa movies have some charm with the way they made the guy, the charming, blocky, robust build of a robot made of fucking space titanium is hard to match, and Heisei did a great job at bringing MechaGodzilla into a more cohesive story, but are we... counting him after his demotion to moguera? regardless, the dudes at Toho apparently had sex with both Hideaki Anno and Ikuto Yamashita because now he looks like if an Eva unit had sex with the aliens from MechaGodzilla's debut, birthing a mechanical replica of my glorious king G-Zilly in the best fucking way possible

THE EYES, THE HEAD, THE GIANT ASS TAIL, THE FUCKING MECHA DORSAL FINS AND THE LASERS AND THE EVERYTHING AUGUTRHGUHGHT I FUCKING LOVE THIS DESIGN

This movie also perfectly portrays how Godzilla isn't easily beaten, like hes a walking nuclear fucking tank, but the smarty smart people over at Toho does so WHILE MAKING HIM THE BIG BAD, with more focus on the now heroic MechaGodzilla--and that's such a hard thing to pull off BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THE PROTAGONIST IS SO FUCKING WELL WRITTEN???? Akane and her relation to the FUCKING GODZILLA FROM 1954 is SO GENUINELY WELL DONE, like i could go on about how well done Akane is as a character but im already writing more than i have to for my english homework and personally i dont want to fucking write more

but the most most most important thing about this movie is how they handled MechaGodzilla
- Government superweapon against the ever present Godzilla? cool, cool, what they did in Heisei, but it fits, i dont see them reintroducing aliens
- Directly mimicking Godzilla's powers in a way that really fits for a man made deterrent to the creature? yeah sure, that totally kicks ass
- him not being demoted to an inferior little bitch whos name is fucking moguera??? thanks toho i love you guys for that by the way.
- him not being made from the remains of mecha ghidorah, or being made out of space titanium from outer fucking space by aliens, but BUILT UPON THE BACKBONE OF THE ORIGINAL 1954 GODZILLA??????

I HAVE NO FUCKING WORDS???????????????????? WHAT?????? WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT OF THIS HOLY FUCKING SHIT?????????????

I LOVE GODZILLA 1954, MECHAGODZILLA AND EVANGELION. AND WHAT THE FUCK WAS TOHO SMOKING TO PUT ALL OF THEM INTO THIS FEVER DREAM ASS MOVIE FOR ME???????????? FOR US???????? TOHO LET ME SMOKE THAT SHIT

AND EXCUSE ME??? THE WAY MECHAGODZILLA MOVES??? THE WAY IT CAN FUCKING, FLY?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? TOHO I LOVE YOU GUYS AHAHWGAHWGAHWGWAGAHWA

Seriously though, i dont think 1954 Godzilla can catch a break, he's been chucked through the gutter and back, the guy gets horribly mutated, spends his existence in pain and confusion destroying a world he doesn’t get, gets hunted down and killed in one of the most AGONIZING DEATHS EVER, and humanity STILL refuses to let the poor guy stay dead

they dig up his fucking skeleton, build an oversized toaster oven around it, and trap him inside Mechagodzilla to force him into combat, even if its unknowing on their part. Kiryu going berserk doesn’t even feel evil it feels tragic AND evil which has a lot going for it

EVEN THE FUCKING POSTER IS PERFECT

this is everything i've ever wanted in a MechaGodzilla movie and more, easily the best portrayal of MechaGodzilla toho make out with me
