New York, New York is an awkward film as it doesn’t entirely work but it’s still great. The film is the 40s/50s musical genre mixed with a complex character study which is normally something he is the best at doing but for me the character doesn’t change enough or do enough to warrant a satisfying ending for his and hers characters. The films two approaches don’t really work together and kinda counteract each other. Another issue is the films runtime that after the first hour becomes a slog to get through as the film becomes repetitive with the scenes of de Niros character kicking off at the same people in what feels like the same scene played over and over again. Acting is obviously brilliant just not enough to entirely save this.
