The psycho franchise is so underrated. Where most franchise find their feet and walk on them until they are worn out (Friday the 13th I love you but you definitely do that). The Psycho franchise takes each sequel and builds on it as Norman's mind fractures more and more each sequel.
Psycho 3 follows a runaway nun who looks alot like Marion crane. She stumbles upon Norman as he still manages the motel and talking to "mother". Once he sees the nun his mind starts to fight within himself as he takes a liking to the nun and his mother wants her boy back.
By now we all know the twist and what Psycho 3 does well is not play into the mystery but the battle of control within Norman. It's so interesting to see especially how everytime he finds happiness something pushes him off the edge. It was also cool to see an actual chase scene with Norman all in his mother's clothes. As for the nun. Her story is just a tragedy. Her romance with Norman was sweet and their date scene was great. Her backstory is also intriguing and her fate a tragedy. Jeff Fahey plays s drifter who wants to get Norman's monet and get out. His schemes are fun to follow but he is definitely not a Sam.
The character highlights here were definitely Norman and Maureen. Norman and his fight for control is shown in the best way. That last scene was so satisfying to see Norman free. Maureen finding peace where she couldn't at the nunnery only to have it slip from her grasp.
They take a more slasher approach in this movie and it works. The body count is higher and the kills look good. The toilet kill was definitely the best but the phone booth kill was good too. The last kill was the most satisfying though as Norman finally breaks free.
Anthony Perkins directs the movie and he does a good job. The underwater scene with Norman near the end was very cool. The look of the movie especially the rundown bates motel was very well done. The music was pretty cool too.
So Psycho 3 may not be as good as 2 but still brings that charm and intrigue that make this series worth watching.

First half makes for another promising addition to the Psycho story, but devolves into a pretty run of the mill 80s slasher by the second half. A fun watch, but loses the thematic depth of it’s predecessors in favor of a more violent and unhinged slasher
