I’m not going to be okay, bud
You don’t need to like an artist to like the art. You don’t need to love a creator to know their work deserves merit. Brown bunny is the single most contentious film in my circle that I surround myself with. Everyone I know has this at a 1/2-2 or a 4-5. I think that this falls down to personal interpretation. I think that people are affected by the medium very differently and certain things hold certain films back for certain people. For example I don’t like
Holy Mountain I think it’s pretentious I think it’s foul and I hate a lot of what’s in it being child nudity, drugged and SAd actresses, and tons of animal cruelty. No matter how I voice my opinion on this subject people will still give this a five star and this will always be someone’s favorite movie. It’s in the same way that people have Regorgitated Sacrifice at a 5 and someone has
Harakiri at a 1. As I watched this now seeing the fact that I watched the unstimulated oral sex scene (watched YouTube cut on first watch) I can understand why people can watch this and be disgusted. As I said in my earlier review of this a few months ago only a pretentious douche nugget would cast an actress to suck his dick. I still do believe that but me judging a movie off of that is irrational, because In doing that I’m judging Vincent Gallo with the movie, and when I just judge the movies I see a really emotional scene exploring grief through a character and the person that plays them. Me saying this isn’t me excusing Vincent Gallos behavior or belittling someone who would dislike the film just because of the scene because it’s the same as someone talking about the connection animal cruelty has had with film since the beginning, but I have no issue with a sex scene even being unstimulated if it wasn’t coerced and both parties and consenting adults.
Now that I feel I’ve defended why I like this film I would like the talk about the actual film. I think this could be one of the most beautiful things ever made. the exploration of grief and the character study of this foul person makes you see the festering bubbles of your own life. I think that people judge this too harshly because of the infamous scene and because of who Vincent Gallo is and don’t even look at the movie. Some say “in this film you can’t separate the art from the artist because the artist is the art” which I will address much later. The minimalist nature of this film encapsulates exactly what it’s trying to convey so well. I love the beauty in banality and mundanity of life. I said that in my Jeanne Dielman review and I think that this is another film that captures the nature of life through an absurdist lens. Sitting in a car watching bugs splat on a windshield and seeing the sun rise and fall while my only company is a man lost in the grief that circumnavigates his skull. He stops from place to place seeing beautiful flowers while he can’t embrace himself or escape the confines of who he is (Hence Bud). The film manages to critique the character of Bud and point out the flaws that Vincent Gallo is able to express his hatred in himself. Being the fact that Bud is obviously a putrid person and Gallo has said that this film is “semi autobiographical” I think that as a person what he did here is a step above Buffalo 66 (BUFFALO 66 is better do not misread what I’m saying).
Finally the dreaded part of this review for me is that I have to address the Vincent in the room. I think as I said in my review prior Vincent Gallo is a conservative POS who sucks, and that was truly what was holding this back from being highly rated prior. I think now that I’ve spent time digging for every single problematic thing in this film that there’s a lot of sadness buried in this. I think this is truly one of the saddest films ever made, and it’s not because of the film strictly it’s because of Gallo. Like Buffalo 66 this love deprived manipulative fuck needs to be seen so bad. He needs to be loved so bad, and can’t for the life of him figure it out. This film seems like the antithesis of what he was saying in Buffalo 66 about himself. Here he sees he is unloveable. He is a manipulative fuck. He is what everyone says he is. Seeing this realization unfold while looking at some of the most beautiful shots to ever grace a film is really a feat. And I know you can’t separate the art from the artist, but you can learn to see through the eyes of someone else, no matter how rotten or ugly.
