this film is a deeply humane portrait of queer survival. messy, unresolved, but burning with the will to imagine futures even when the present feels impossible.
what really lands is the film’s reminder that queer survival is never solitary. find your queer family, find your queer community, demi tuhan dah! In moments of intimacy, camaraderie, or even fleeting laughter, the unbearable becomes bearable. It is togetherness that keeps us alive in a world that so often tries to break us.
this could’ve been a five-star, if not for the overt romanticization of baby and ronaldo’s relationship. I get it narratively, but my moral compass couldn’t quite let that slide. i do get that it's a recurring theme on the film. the tension between young queers and older queers and it made most explicit in that older guy’s line, ‘younger queers have it easier,’ to which Baby replies, ‘everyone is having a hard time.’”
And then there’s the ending. In the final scene, as they’re being silly together, Baby suddenly turns and looks at us… absolutely floored me.
