This is usually not my type of movie but something about this one really worked. Watching the slow massage/cooking scenes were interesting, and the characters, while not the deepest in the world, were also good subjects to watch. Also, I've only been to NYC once, but I have never scene a film make the city seem so different. Staying inside in these cramped spaces, only seeing the city outside, was such a great choice and I had to remember that we were there. I think the film could've had 15 minutes cut off and it wouldn't have detracted from the atmosphere.

Beautiful meditation on immigration and loneliness in the big city. Those who weren't born here seek to connect with kindred spirits, but each comes with their own past.

The film is especially rewarding in its conclusion. The night after Didi brings Cheung home, Amy remarks on Cheung's neglect of his wife. It's later revealed Cheung's wife is back at home and they don't have an ideal relationship. By the time we encounter them, Cheung and his wife seem to only discuss money. Amy's remark resurfaces in a more direct way during the resolution. Her words reverberate through Cheung in more ways than one.

After the film, I thought about narrative conclusions and characters' respective comeuppances, how they either give us what we want or reject our desires. Beyond the "righteousness" with which I subjectively view the ending, there is a refreshing sombre realism imbued. The credits feel almost like an homage to Call Me By Your Name.
