I have been mentally preparing to be let down by the upcoming slate of big releases for about 6 months. Much to my utmost pleasure Spielberg was able to capture one of the most sincere movies I have watched in a long while.
Sitting down you feel throughly immersed in the story’s flow, it is never spoon fed, and even feels extraordinarily campy at times. Even through the campy feel it’s about as authentically Spielberg as can be.
The tone of every scene is set behind a score from John Williams that brings all the emotion without the actors having to speak or move. You ride through the ups and downs of the action and thrill that the score brings, all the while trying to contextualize this mystery of the sci-fi.
While being incredibly fun, especially the scenes with Emily Blunt (and Wyatt Russell but mostly Emily blunt), there are some really intriguing themes thrown out there about how the private sector can have a chokehold on democracy when they come into possession of something powerful. It’s a pretty subtle but simple reference to growing presence of big tech, especially AI labs, in the government. Their products and knowledge are at a premium and they hold the control over how they are governed. Essentially they have removed the government’s ability to run a democracy.
There’s also the obvious questions of our purpose in the world, religion, and existence, but those are quite straight forward and traditional in sci-fi so no point to dive deep into them.
Absolutely loved this, shocked at the divisive reviews I have seen all around. Go see it!!
