given that I am aware of systemic racism and the problems with American policing, what am I supposed to gain or learn from this movie?
it's pretty obvious the plot is about racial tensions and policing, and i was expecting both the family to act extra fearful/stressed about having to interact with the police, and the police to do shitty, illegal things. but like come on. the family makes extremely stupid, exaggerated decisions that feel way too irrational to be explained by fear. and everyone in this movie is so insufferably annoying, dumb or fake - i have no one to root for except for the movie to end.
this would be much better as a teaching film or documentary tbh than its marketed "thriller" or "drama" titles. i need more things going on, a more engaged story with way less predictability for me to be engaged.
and that isn't to say that this movie doesn't have anything going for it. everything non-plot related is really good. the actors are good, the shots and set are great. and ultimately, it's probably a lot more engaging if you are less educated on the topics it sets to address because you'll be able to feel more, be surprised and shocked, etc. but for me, this just fell completely flat. excited to see where his career goes though
