Just finished watching this short film after finishing Oz earlier today.
“Zo” follows Beecher and O’reily after the events of oz, showing how the prison still lingers in them even when they’re out.
Even though we don’t really see their friendship after the first season of “Oz”, I still love the fact that this short follows their characters because they are the two characters who carry some of the most interesting dynamics in oz with other characters (at least in my opinion) + both are in my top 3 Oz characters (with Chris Keller being my favorite, Tobias Beecher being my second and Ryan O’reily being my third). Beecher’s dynamics with Keller and Schillinger were definitely the most interesting in my opinion: one built on love and obsession, the other on hate and revenge. and then there’s O’reily, constantly scheming but somehow still one of the most emotional characters on the show when it comes to Gloria (the Chief Attending Physician of Oz and his love interest) and his brother Cyril, no matter how much he hurts them you can still tell he genuinely loves and cares for them both (something that could be said about Keller and his love for Beecher as well).
I really connected to Oz, and even though i just finished it, i already want to rewatch, which doesn’t happen to me often, especially with a series with 6 seasons. And while I don’t think that the last season was that bad, I still think that it could’ve been way stronger; I think that the writing of Keller’s character in that season kind of erased his development (which is a shame because it was written great in my opinion since they didn’t make Keller a “good” person all of a sudden but still made him change realistically through his love for Beecher which made him go from a selfish psychopath to a guy who’s still a psychopath but a way less selfish one due to the one he loves being the top priority for him instead of himself). And even though his ending did make sense for his character I still think he deserved a better ending, one would take into account everything that he and Beecher went through and not just the bad stuff, but maybe I’m just biased because I just love this couple and these characters with all of their flaws.
Oz is such an amazing tv show in my opinion and a very underrated one, especially considering it’s the first one-hour HBO drama series but still doesn’t have the same recognition as other shows that it paved the way for. If you don’t mind watching things that might be considered brutal at times or graphically sexual I’ll definitely recommend a watch because it definitely became my new favorite tv show.
And as for the short film, I think Dean and Lee did a wonderful job because even though the last time they played O’reily and Beecher was over 20 years ago they were still very in character and portrayed the characters just as good and authentic as they did in Oz and the ending being open actually felt right to me, it fits the world of oz, where nothing ever truly ends or resolves neatly.
Anyways, it’s nice to see these characters beefing again while also trying to get used to their new lives after all of those years in Oz.
