Iron Monkey’s humor usually doesn’t stick. You know what sticks though? The choreography. Admittedly, this may be my first “wire-fu” movie and, from cultural osmosis I assumed it was too fake looking to be enjoyable (especially now since I have just watched a bunch of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies). The thing is though, Iron Monkey doesn’t go for verisimilitude, it goes for spectacle. It’s broad humor, which was maybe not for me, is right in line with the exaggerated leaps in the air.
This is also, admittedly, my first movie seeing Donnie Yen in a leading role and I have come to the conclusion that he is the man.
