❝You can't ask me to battle nature in my own heart.❞

I'm not the biggest Keira Knightley fan, but she was undoubtedly the best part of The Duchess.
I had a vague idea of the plot from reading about it ages ago, but Georgiana's story was heartbreaking. It's common knowledge that society in the past wasn't favourable towards women, and yet watching the vileness committed by the Duke was almost surreal. Despite her position and wealth, Georgiana was basically imprisoned while advocating for the freedom of others. Every time there was a moment of happiness in her life, the Duke immediately extinguished it, and I abhorred him. The fact that the same situation occurred to her related descendant two centuries later is genuinely diabolical.
The costumes and sets were absolutely gorgeous, and the soundtrack was beautiful, adhering to every scene it was used in perfectly.
Keira Knightley killed it as Georgiana; it was fascinating to watch as Georgiana's naivety quickly gave way to acceptance, only to rediscover love and have it taken away again.
Ralph Fiennes was excellent as well, because it was impossible not to hate him from the very beginning. His performance, due to the nature of his character, was subtle but measured, resulting in a villain worse than Voldemort (I say while not having watched most of the Harry Potter films).
Unfortunately I couldn't concentrate whenever Dominic Cooper was onscreen because he looked so much like Anya Taylor-Joy it was scary, but there were some good moments in his acting; the rest of the cast didn't really stand out to me.
All in all, The Duchess was a saddening experience, but I'm glad I gave it a watch.
