This is a pretty straight-forward look at Liza in the 70’s. Instead of a traditional biography, this documentary decides to look at Liza through the lens of her mentors who molded her in the decade after her mother’s death. We hear from mostly old friends, and a few mentors who are still around and see how they made her into a star.
I liked this approach in theory, but it came across that Liza was an entity that was created by more talented and successful people. It makes her seem like she had nothing to do with her success.
Also, Liza is really not in this movie much at all. Even when she is, she’s cagey about the more salacious topics like her marriages or drug abuse at Studio 54. This is far from being a tell-all documentary.
All in all, I enjoyed this and did learn some fun new facts and tidbits about this star. I wouldn’t go back and re-watch it, but it’s fine.
