My reception of this film may be heavily influenced by the ever-growing existential weight of our current time period. But at the same time, that feels relevant and with merit.
Academically speaking, art that calls attention to itself as such and encourages the examination of its merits is one of my favourite functions a piece of art can do. This film lives in a state of self-reflection that swallows you in an art world separated from time, yet simultaneously so deeply steeped in it.
Emotionally speaking, I teared up twice. Again, this might be because of the weight of the world is so damn heavy right now. But I don't think that's a normal response to this movie. It wasn't because of the traditional narrative, what little there is. I was overwhelmed with the pure wonder of art and its relationship to humanity. This film kindled a warm optimism within. It drew attention to everything I love about art and my place in the world. A spectator, a participant, a consumer, a human.
