Incredibly flawed in its occasional mimicking of Tim Blake Nelson’s past collaborators and peers (the Coens notably come to mind here), but the attempt is pretty cool all the same.
I like that it seems Nelson kinda wanted to make a true stoner movie, not one playing dress-up but actually living by and indulging in the various “stoner” philosophies that our main character has been teaching as a straight-laced professor.
It does feel like a haze of contradictions at times which is partly the fun, so I admire the guy who made The Grey Zone to be ambitious again in a rather different way.
Also, I believe the ultimate thing you can be in life according to this movie is a Jewish stoner so hallelujah.
