my favourite thing about the cinema is when you go to watch a movie without knowing anything, assuming it’ll just be a fun night out, but then you leave actually feeling something. i’m not saying this movie will win any awards, but it was genuinely such a good movie - it had a bit of everything. the main plot was pretty basic (famous singer steals an unknown singers song), but they managed to make it feel really special throughout. some of the comedy elements genuinely had me laughing, and there were also a few moments that felt quite emotional in there. was very surprised with both Paul Rudd’s and Nick Jonas’ performance, since they don’t really hit me as “good actors”, but this was easily the best performance i’ve seen from both of them. i found it very easy to empathise with Paul Rudd’s character but that’s because i’m sure this is a situation that has happened to many people in the past.
don’t usually say this about movies, especially with my fried attention span, but there genuinely wasn’t a moment that felt boring for me. the highlight for me was when Paul Rudd got into the hot tub with his clothes on - i couldn’t stop laughing for a few minutes after i kept reimagining the scene. the conclusion to the fight at the house was beautiful, especially when it turns out to be a feel-good movie. i thought the ending was perfect, but i wished they had ended it when the song ended, instead of attaching the extra scene on at the end - i would’ve preferred to not know if the situation had been fixed or not. also, the song was actually really catchy but now i have to wait until the movie officially releases to listen to the soundtrack which is quite annoying. bear in mind, this rating is more based on how much i enjoyed the movie, rather than how objectively well-made it is.
