Alpha left me stunned. It’s an ambitious film with a lot to chew on. It’s extremely uncomfortable, but also very touching, which is a quality I admire in Julia Ducournau’s work. While I don’t think this is her best, I’d argue it’s her most fascinating to date, and it features many incredible moments and ideas. That said, I believe the film is a bit too bloated and unfocused for its own good. Nevertheless, it’s a film I’m unlikely to stop thinking about anytime soon, and it only solidifies Ducournau as one of the most compelling working filmmakers.
