Dammit Shinkai, I was really hoping for this to be a great first taste for your masterful forbidden love, yet it fell so short. The introduction of this movie is phenomenal, a heartwarming story with 3 very charming characters, some clearly foreshadowing lurking and truly a “promise” for a good movie. Unfortunately, after we flash forward to years later this movie loses itself completely as it turns from a drama to a supernatural war thriller within seconds. This second act is filled with crappy fluff, constantly bringing in new concepts and just jamming our heads with more than we can even think to understand. Not to mention we don’t see the best 2 characters for a very good chunk of time which was pretty annoying, because I’m sitting there like “whats going on, where’s the main dynamic, oh wait I have to pay attention another scientific overload”, like damn just let me process something. They give us bo damn time to process anything and also gives the characters the ability to immediately consume all this knowledge and teach a whole godamn class on it. Now, as we approached the third act and got away from the war and science a little bit, the taste of Sayuri and Hiroki was great, I love their relationship and how it is explained, destined love is real love and their relationship is inderstood vecause of how they set it up, and once our climax began, although there were major logistics issues, it did get the emotions going pretty heavy. Once again, unfortunately they don’t even give us forbidden love and just make up some random reason for a happy ending, like the entire plotpoint between them is that they can’t be with each other and the reason they are able to be by the end is because they are with each other, if you got a headache while reading that good, you now know what thinking while watching was. I don’t just all around there are some super brights spots like the animation, character personalities, and the first act and romance, but ultimately very big issues in this movie cannot be overstated and really leave a bad mark on this one.
With this I have now finished Shinkai’s current filmography and even though I do need to rewatch a couple, I have a good idea of where they rank.
