I don’t support the death penalty 99% of the time, so I don’t agree with John Henry Ramirez being put to death. I also hate the “I accepted God and became religious so I’m a changed man” angle that Ramirez and so many other people say. You stabbed a man 29 times. Good for you for trying to do better and change yourself within prison, but I can’t stand how people equate being religious meaning you’re a good person. Mixed feelings on this.

as someone who’s taken many classes in philosophy and criminal justice, the death penalty is one of the biggest things that i could never wrap my head around enough to form a clear consensus on. on one hand, i don’t think it’s efficient to take one life for another, but on the other hand, who am i to dictate how victims’ families want to seek justice and closure?

in terms of the latter, however, i think this documentary really showcased that there will never truly be any closure with a loss so abrupt. castro’s son himself even seemed confused as he processed his emotions after the fact, showcasing that while ramirez was punished for his violent crime, there’s still that empty feeling that comes along with losing his father, something that the loss of another life while never fill. it’s difficult to think about how it’s simply an endless spiral, about how castro’s son lost his father and now ramirez’ son lost his father as well. it’s a really tricky and complicated topic that i think this short film covered well.

Feel sorry for the sons in this movie…both were robbed from life with their fathers due to one man’s actions.

I’m vehemently anti death penalty, so I came into the film with my own biases and my opinion was not even slightly changed.  But I did appreciate seeing the multiple perspectives.
