Bill Maher is one of the most insufferable people to ever have a large public platform. He has successfully divorced himself from a conservative identity while reciting the GOP’s party lines on trans rights and regurgitating their Islamophobia. He stands for nothing that is progressive and he yearns for an America run by establishment dems who are focused on pointless endeavors rather than improving the quality of life for Americans.
All that said, I loved watching this. Hate watching has never made sense to me, but he is so smug and self-assuredly thinks that he is the smartest person alive. His jokes are not funny, but his presence is funny. Him asking a religious person “why are you religious?” and upon hearing that person’s testimony, responding “that’s lame” is hysterical.
I personally do not care for religion, but am fine with its presence if it can help individuals personally without harming anyone else. Whether that is 100 percent achievable is up for debate. Maher, however, hates it so much that he needed to travel the country to find hillbillies that he could make fun of. It’s very mean-spirited and he is such a dick. But he is such a dick to a comical degree that it ends up being a comedy—but not the comedy he intended, but a comedy where he is a clown trying to score points by punching down while really achieving nothing. That’s not to say, however, that the people he interviews here are innocent. Many seem to be hateful idiots. But instead of Maher’s intended premise of a genius exposing religious morons, it’s hateful morons arguing with each other, with one of those morons having a superiority complex.
This guys sucks, but it’s fun to laugh at how much he sucks.
This video by Big Joel inspired me to watch this documentary. I’ve never watched Maher’s show, but watching other people easily dismantle the strawmen he has built a fortune upon is endlessly entertaining.
