Wasteman is one of the more brutal films I've seen about life in prison; it's raw, gripping, and doesn't let up on the tension until the very last second.
I really liked the plot, but there was so much crime and action in every scene that after a while it started to drag a little, and the ninety minute run-time felt much longer. The cinematography was excellent, though; I loved that the 3:4 aspect ratio added to the atmosphere of confinement and claustrophobia around the prison, and the added mix of vertical phone filming, especially during fight scenes, made the film feel more like a documentary.
David Jonsson is very quickly becoming one of my favourite actors, and he did an incredible job as Taylor. It was so compelling seeing him transform from a quiet inmate just wanting to make it out, to a desperate man pushed to the breaking point. I was also very impressed with Tom Blyth's performance as Dee; from the moment he appeared on-screen, the general hostility went up to maximum, and it was hard to take my eyes off him because he was so volatile.
Wasteman is a difficult watch, and I don't think I can revisit for a while, but I'd highly recommend giving it a go, especially if you like realistic portrayals of life.
