"I held filmmakers and directors off as people that existed in another world. And I remember feeling like Spielberg was a guy who was kind of from my side of the world. And that was the beginning of me feeling like, "Maybe I could do something like this, too.'"
Jaws @ 50 is a really fun reminder of just how effective this movie still is. Even after all these years, the tension works, the pacing is tight, and that score still makes your stomach drop the second it starts. Watching made me appreciate how much Spielberg pulled off with simple techniques, practical effects, and a lot of patience. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, and longtime fans may recognize a lot of the stories, but it tells them well and with real affection. The focus on why Jaws worked, not just how, makes it engaging from start to finish. A little nostalgic, sure, but it earns it. For a movie that changed Hollywood, this is a fitting and very watchable tribute.
