Jane, a struggling but perpetually stoned actress, has a busy day ahead. She has several important tasks on her list, including buying more marijuana. Even though she already has a good start on the day's planned drug use, she eats her roommate's pot-laced cupcakes and embarks on a series of misadventures all over Los Angeles.

The first movie of my 20s!
It's crazy to think that Gregg Araki followed up one of the most depressing dramas ever made about child abuse with a stoner comedy featuring a Carrot Top cameo. My twenties have finally arrived, so I'm watching a feel-good, 87-minute existential comedy that I've been meaning to rewatch sounded like a great idea. It was.
Gregg Araki has always been one of my favorite directors. His style can appear amateurish, but it always matches the tone provided. There are moments in 'Smiley Face' that are so dumb, from the fractured editing, but it works so damn well, throwing us into Jane's headspace. She's wonderfully played by Anna Faris, who commits 100% to the bit and is gloriously hilarious. The other cast members are fun, particularly John Krasinski and Adam Brody.
The pacing for this movie is perfect, and the presentation does so much to bring us into this world with an anything-goes attitude. They take advantage of the spaces provided with creative camera angles, distorted sound design, and visual storytelling to craft the perfect stoner comedy.

What it felt like to smoke carts in high school. Really funny to use the paranoia to drive the gag and comedic sequences just to end up making everything worse. Also Star guitar in the opening title scene is pristine I love that song 🫰
