Better be careful what I say about this one because I might be related to this guy, we got the same last names. I will admit, it did make me a tad paranoid that they kept saying my last name over and over again, it felt weird. Otherwise, it’s a solid bio-pic though I will say I don’t know or have encountered people with Tourettes so it is a bit foreign to me. I thought the story was solid though I did wish they had expanded more on the ending. It really felt weird how he taught like 3 classes then got an award from the queen, I definitely know more happened in between that they didn’t show. Oh also, a whole lot of swearing and crazy statements that you’d get from someone with Tourette’s, so brace yourself. It’s good, it didn’t blow me away though, I don’t really need a rewatch.

This movie is definitely deserved of every award it won in the BAFTAs and definitely deserved an Oscar but could not get nominated and I hate that about it.
As someone who also lives with neurological conditions I love this movie and the representation it gives. Though Tourette’s is a much more severe and less treated condition I still find comfort in a lot of this movie. Johns character does not let his condition define him which I find very inspiring and I think everyone who is neurotypical should watch this movie to understand that literally everyone who is neurodivergent where that be, Tourette’s syndrome (duh), adhd dyspraxia, dyslexiaetc they can’t help the way they effect them and I think the early 90’s setting is a great way to show this.
Moving onto the movie it’s self it was amazing, it was heartwarming and also heartbreaking in a lot of instances, my favourite scene by far is the courtroom scene with Tommy and how he talks about working with John, johns death scene though it doesn’t show much is by far one of the saddest moments in the movie and the scene of John in the hospital after being jumped. I also like the fact that when John is walking with Murray in the forest he doesn’t tic verbally I’m pretty sure because he’s comfortable with him, which I really liked. The only thing I didn’t really like or understand is why he suddenly developed it (I’m not a doctor so idk) I would have assumed your born with Tourette’s but I’m writing this after seeing the movie with no prior knowledge so I don’t know what I’m really talking about.
The scene of him going into the library acc made me tear up for a moment and he looked so happy at the end.
