I am so retarded for not wanting to view this movie LITERALLY on New Year's Eve. Where do I even start? The connection between 6 every day citizens when ultimately, Ceaușescu's regime was falling thanks to the revolutions in Timișoara, December of 1989. A young man my age wanting to escape communism before it got even worse with his friend; his father searching for a substitute actress for a holiday special that never aired; the actress whose father was repulsed by Nea Nicu' (Ceaușescu) and did her best not to go live; her handyman neighbour who was coming home just to find out his kid may have accidentally doomed him; the lady who had the handyman come over to her house to pack everything before losing her 'soul and pride' due to demolitions; and finally her son who was a security officer working to find oppressors.
Ce decembrie călduros! Mie îmi place. Nu suport frigul. Nici mie nu-mi place frigul. Numai că, de sărbători e frumos să avem un pic de zăpadă. Ca să simțim și noi că e iarnă, nu?This dialogue hit me a lot and I'm not sure why.
Moving to other aspects, our boys our quite handsome, I'm glad I'm Romanian, we look pretty good young, but as we get older we look like alcoholics because unfortunately that's the truth. And the smoking, the last time I was in Bucharest back in September I've said to myself: Are we in a competition or what? Why is everybody smoking like it's a race? What, is it to see who dies first or what? So that's another truth about ourselves, thank God I don't smoke nor drink. And the little boy who played Marius, looks just like I did when I was little, at first I thought he looked like a younger version of one of my friends but then I saw an old photo of mine, and I couldn't believe it.
The production, as the director said: It took an army to make this film. There are no existent TVs from the 80' so they had to 3D print them and set them up, the state doesn't invest anything in our cinema, yet we're the best country in the Orient when it comes to movies.
Finally I'd like to mention the (I'm not kidding now), DUMBASS comedy, we all are depicted here exactly as we are, our society, after 35 years it may seem like it didn't change yet we're so set back. And the tension, now I can understand better the fear my mum had to live through while growing up, the whispers of neighbours which would do anything to turn each other in, I truly do understand, I didn't live in that period, and I am so thankful. At last, I watched it now being inspired by the fact that it's quite appropriate giving our current situation so let's go vote in mass for our king Nicușor Dan this weekend.
