Ghost Killer
Showing a friend this, since we got through all of Baby Assassins together.

This movie is sort of like a dark reflection of Yugo Sakamoto's Baby Assassins world, right? The kills are played seriously all the way through, the killers are deeply antisocial rather than merely playfully antisocial, and the organization that employs the assassins also sells date rape drugs. Then again, maybe "dark reflection" isn't quite the right phrase since there's a sort of earnest morality at the center of the determination that an organization dedicated to killing couldn't possibly be good. This earnest morality is also at the root of Fumika's determination that, in his death, Kudo should help people instead of hurting them. It's really dark that the center of this film is a girl who's absolutely not built for this shit and is actively and grievously harmed throughout the film, but it also allows for a deep sense of hopefulness to set in.

I'm going to reiterate my comment from before and say that this should get sequels, and then Baby Assassins should get (more) sequels. Every single year should simply feature Akari Takaishi in a new action film or three until Akari Takaishi is globally famous and can retire as a fantasticajillionaire like Scrooge McDuck. Anything less means that we've failed as a global civilization.

"I don't want to get involved with antisocial forces anymore!"

An okay movie with good action, but severe underutilization of its gimmick.

Dead man yaoi where you get possessed by dapping up the ghost, with probably the best fight choreography we’re going to get this year.
