The way the film portrays two completely opposite sides of human nature at the same time affected me deeply.. Most films pick a side; when morality is the subject, they either focus on the brighter side of humanity or its darker side.. But here, we get to see the darker side of goodness as well.. “To my dying day, I’ll never understand Willi. Or what he did. First he tried to kill us all with his torpedoes. Nevertheless we fished him out of the sea, took him aboard, shared everything we had with him. You would’ve thought he’d have been grateful. Then he… he let poor old Gus die of thirst.. What do you do to people like that?” People can’t overcome either the goodness or the evil within themselves.. On one hand, there are people compassionate enough to save someone who had just tried to kill them.. On the other, there is a kind of cruelty that remains unchanged despite every act of kindness shown to it.. And both exist in the same world, within the same humanity.. In that situation, the only way to deal with evil seems to be evil itself, unfortunately..

Filmde insan doğasının birbirine tamamen zıt iki yönünün aynı anda bu kadar güçlü gösterilmesi beni çok etkiledi.. Çoğu film bir taraf seçer; konu ahlak olduğunda film ya aydın tarafı gösterir ya da karamsar tarafı.. Ama burada iyiliğin kötü yönlerini görebiliyoruz, “Öldüğüm güne kadar Willi’yi anlayamayacağım. Ya da yaptıklarını. Önce torpidolarıyla hepimizi öldürmeye çalıştı. Buna rağmen onu denizden çıkardık, tekneye aldık, sahip olduğumuz her şeyi onunla paylaştık. İnsan en azından minnettar olacağını düşünürdü. Sonra da… zavallı yaşlı Gus’un susuzluktan ölmesine göz yumdu. Böyle insanlara ne yaparsın?” insanlar hem içlerindeki iyilikle başa çıkamıyorlar hem de içlerindeki kötülükle.. Bir yanda, kendilerine zarar vermiş birini bile kurtaracak kadar merhametli insanlar var.. Diğer yanda ise yapılan tüm iyiliklere rağmen değişmeyen, açıklanması zor bir kötülük.. Ve ikisi de aynı dünyada, aynı insanlık içinde var.. Bu durumda kötülükle başa çıkmanın tek yolu kötülük maalesef..
