unfortunately i know the book too well to not have spent the whole film comparing the two. i think the book is a lot more subtle with most of the themes (specifically the bomb & the father’s politics) much to its benefit. and, though i’ll admit i did watch this hoping it would clear up the ending for me, i think making the meaning of the ending so explicit really really was a mistake. i much preferred the ambiguity of the book, and don’t actually agree with how they interpreted the ending. also some of the acting was bad, and the script wasn’t great. but i really liked how a lot of it looked. and i liked most of the stuff in japan
