This is a real obscure treat. A British Gangster Noir with a startling performance by an especially young Richard Attenborough, playing a psychopathic murdering gangster who is surprisingly sympathetic with a level of youthful innocence corrupted. It's easy to see a lot of Peter Lorre in M in Attenborough's performance here, down to his look and general demeanor. The supporting cast is also really great, with Carol Marsh as the love interest who just radiates pure innocence while being led down a dangerous path. Of course, as a Doctor Who fan seeing William Hartnell as Dallow was quite welcome, he does a great job here as one of Attenborough's gang partners who quietly has a big heart. The cinematography stands out a lot here too, with the camera movements and framing resulting in many extremely memorable images. Seek this one out.
